 Bellanwila Rajamaha Viharaya

Bellanwila Rajamaha viharaya is a temple situated in a typical Sri Lankan suburban village around Colombo. It is with a long heritage of glorious history in Anuradhapura era. It stands out as the most historic and significant among the many temples in the island today.

.Main Vihara Geya

The main viharageya resembles Polonnaruwa architecture which house the majestic standing Buddha statue, very similar to that of Avukana. The most impressive sculpture is the standing image surrounded by Buddhist statues of different postures. Behind is the recumbent Buddha image depicting the passing away. There are Some frescoes depicting the life of Buddha from birth to enlightment.

 
Bodhi-tree

The great sanctity attached to this temple is due to its sacred Bo tree that according to ancient texts is one of the thirty-two saplings that sprang from the sacred Bo tree at Anuradhapura, planted in the 3rd century B.C.
The Belanwilla royal temple is considered to be sacred as it roots the sacred Bodhi tree (sacred fig tree) that is one of the thirty-two saplings that sprung from the fruits of the sacred Bo-tree located in Anuradhapura.
